If Anisa were asked how she’d ended up back at her room in the resort, she wouldn’t be able to say exactly. The ride from town to their beachside resort was one big blur. All she knew was that one second she was crying in an alley with Nasser staring down at her in abject concern, and the next he was guiding her into her room, pointing out things she shouldn’t trip over rather than touching her. She wasn’t too far gone emotionally and mentally to miss noticing that he avoided contact with her. Anisa should’ve been relieved he was being so kind and gentlemanly, but right then, she could have seriously used a hug.

Knowing there was no chance that Nasser would give that much-needed physical comfort to her, she wrapped her own arms around herself, squeezing until a sense of wholeness came over her.

Still, feeling fragile and staring anxiously at the four walls that now surrounded her, Anisa’s gaze landed on the sliding patio doors.

“Careful,” he cautioned gently when she bumped the corner of the coffee table on her way out to the patio.

She needed fresh air. Being confined in her resort when her brother was out there somewhere had her skin crawling.

Because now that her head was clearing, and she wasn’t drowning from the grief of learning that Ara was missing, Anisa refused to believe that her brother was gone.

He’s alive.

She didn’t know how she knew, only that her gut and heart wouldn’t let go of that strong conviction.

She looked out over the expansive green separating her from the gleaming white beach and deep blue ocean beyond. A breeze waved the drooping branches of the palm trees scattered over the lawn and teased goose bumps from her overheated body. Surrounded by such natural and manmade beauty, but Anisa couldn’t dredge up the emotion to care about anything other than the tightly coiled ball of anxiety pressurizing her chest.

She didn’t care about her legs hurting from standing there until the sky darkened and the last of the sun’s rays faded below the ocean’s horizon.

She was barely cognizant of the night ferrying in chillier temperatures, the nip of the breeze slipping under her clothing and wrapping itself around her jittery bones. Or how her stomach clenched and twisted, not only from the omnipresent fear for Ara, but out of simple hunger now.

Anisa even missed the sliding door opening until Nasser spoke to her.

“Anisa, come in. I ordered room service.”

Not facing him, she shook her head.

She heard his sigh drift to her, the frustration in his voice tempered when he said, “You have to eat.”

“Why?” she sniped, forcing back a sniffle. “Ara’s out there, alone, maybe with no shelter or food.”

“You don’t know if he’s alone.”

Anisa turned stiffly to him, her eyes wide and her lips trembling. “If I know my brother, he’s probably alone. He’s always done everything alone. Even when he’s surrounded in a room full of people, he’s always by himself.”

Nasser leaned against the sliding door, filling the doorway but not making a move to cross the threshold.
